Opening a Heartlight class at your school is easy!
Join over 100 schools nationwide! Open Heartlight at your school!
Here's how it works:
Facilities Required:
The best place to hold Heartlight is in the Multi-Purpose room or gym. However many schools hold Heartlight in
an outside area such as a kindergarten playground or ampitheater. If an alternate facility is not available during
inclement weather, outside classes are rescheduled.
Schedule:
Heartlight runs three 7-week sessions during the school year. Class is held once a week, each class is one
hour long. You choose the day! We will work with you to determine the best dates and times for Heartlight at your
school.
Cost:
The cost for Heartlight varies slightly between schools. Because Heartlight is a non-profit organization and works
in partnership with most school districts, we do not pay facility fees. Occasionally the district does charge a special
use fee which must be included in the cost of the program. Please contact us for pricing information in your school
district.
Presentation:
Before each session begins, Heartlight comes to the school to make a brief presentation. The presentation is short
and fun for students and staff. We go to assemblies, lunch recess or, most popular, short (1 minute) classroom
presentations. Fliers are sent home with the students. All fliers are approved the district. Heartlight directly supports
the PE curriculum. School administrators know this and are want Heartlight to be successful. We rely on the support
of our schools to help make their students shine!
Registration:
Girls and boys in grades K-5 (6th graders also) are invited to join Heartlight. Parents call the Heartlight office
to pre-register their student for the class. A pre-registration list is provided to the school. Students bring their
registration form and fee to the first Heartlight class Heartlight handles all aspects of registration. Staff time and
resources are not used for any aspect of managing a Heartlight class.
Instructors:
All Heartlight Instructors must be high school graduates. Prior to teaching Heartlight, all Instructors must have
experience with teaching groups of children. Instructors train with an experienced teacher in a Heartlight class for
a full session to learn our policies and procedures and class management techniques. All Instructors attend
Heartlight training clinics where they are taught the dance routines used in our classes. All instructors must obtain
an FBI background clearance prior to teaching. Instructors are observed and supervised by their area Directors.
Class:
Instructors arrive at the school ten minutes prior to class time. Instructors bring boom boxes to play their music. If
their regular meeting place is occupied (e.g. book fair, Halloween carnival) Instructors are prepared to hold class
outside or in an alternate room. Larger classes have more than one instructor.
Program:
The children learn jazz, hip hop and aerobics dance moves as they follow their instructor to choreographed
routines. The music is popular music heard on television and radio. All music is screened for lyrics and innuendos.
Each session, we use brand new music with new choreography. The children experience tremendous success
and happiness as they master the dance steps, get a great workout.and have fun with their friends.
Positive reinforcement is always used; increasing self-esteem and confidence is a primary goal of Heartlight.
Children feel great about themselves as they master the dances and perform for their friends and family.
Dismissal:
Many of our students attend on-site after school daycare. After walking students back to day care, the Heartlight
Instructor waits on campus until all other students are picked up by their parents. Heartlight has a strict policy that
instructors do not leave campus until every child is picked up or supervised. Heartlight will follow any special
dismissal procedures required by the school.
Performance:
Each session the students enrolled in Heartlight put on a performance showcasing what they've learned. We perform
at football halftime shows in NFL stadiums, huge venues in community parks, county fairs, parades, and school
assemblies. Check out videos and pictures from some of our performances at our PERFORMANCES page.
